OPI vs. VRI vs. on-site interpreting: how to choose

A plain-language guide to delivery modes, trade-offs and project fit.

HBPO Knowledge Desk · October 2026 · Guides

Start with the setting, not the acronym.

The right interpretation mode depends on the communication setting, subject matter, participants and operational constraints. Over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) is often convenient when visual context is less important. Video remote interpretation (VRI) can add facial cues, gestures and visual engagement. On-site interpretation places the interpreter physically at the venue, which can be useful for complex group interactions, mobility and settings where reliable technology is a concern.

Choose deliberately

  • Identify the languages and expected proficiency level.
  • Consider whether participants benefit from visual cues or physical presence.
  • Decide between simultaneous and consecutive workflows.
  • Confirm scheduling, confidentiality, consent and technology expectations.
  • Plan for accessibility, backup connectivity and clear turn-taking.

Budget and preparation matter.

A project plan should reflect meeting length, number of interpreters, special terminology, location, technical support and preparation materials. Longer simultaneous sessions may call for team rotation. Sensitive assignments require an appropriate confidentiality process.
